No part one of any series of articles should ever forget the most obvious, and expierenced IRC users you may just want to go ahead and read Part Two. What is IRC? IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. It was originally created by Jarkko Oikarinen as a replacement to the UNIX "talk" program back in 1988. IRC is a client/server system. The user runs the client which in turn runs with the server who connects the user, the server, and the rest of the IRC network. IRC is a multi-user chat protocol that allows many users under there own "nicks" in IRC "channels" where they can converse and more. To sum it up for all, IRC is a place where many users can talk with each other. IRC is quickly becoming one of the more popular Internet Resources. If IRC sounds new and exciting to check out for the first time you are going to need a client. Many of us simply refer to [IRC] as the underground of the wired world. You will need special software to connect to a great source of peer to peer sources like movies, games, software, and so much more. To get there you need what we call a [IRC] client. Where can I get a client? What is one? A client is the program that runs on your computer, managing the data IRC sends and receives. Under Windows, the IRC client is typically a WINSOCK-compliant application. This means you can use it on any WINSOCK 1.1 compliant TCP/IP stack (like Trumpet WINSOCK, Microsoft Wolverine, or the TCP/IP stack in Windows 95). Some of the IRC clients for Windows are mIRC, WS_IRC, IRCII for Windows, and IRC4WIN. Out of those, the number one is mIRC. mIRC supports customizable pop up menus, alias, and remote tools (simple yet powerful scripting), a toolbar, great options, and much much more. Plus, it comes in both 16 and 32-bit versions. For simplicity I am gonna recommend two easy to use [IRC] clients. 1. MIRC- one of the grand daddys of [IRC] . Download this at http://www.mirc.com/get.html mIRC is a shareware IRC client for Windows. It is developed and copyrighted by Khaled Mardam-Bey. mIRC is a highly configurable IRC client with all the goodies other clients on UNIX, Macintosh and even on windows offer, combined with a *nice* and clean user interface. mIRC offers full color text lines, DCC File Send and Get capabilities, programmable aliases, a remote commands and events handler, place sensitive popup menu's, a great Switchbar, World Wide Web and sound support, and... a lot more. mIRC is shareware but not crippled in any way... Why do you need mIRC? I guess that *if* you decide to explore IRC you should do it with the best program around, not? And assuming you use Windows you should use mIRC! On the Windows platform several other programs offer the possibility to use IRC but none of them offers the convenience mIRC gives you.. mIRC will not work on WinCE or other Operating Systems like Linux, Mac OS, PalmOS, Epoc, Atari's or the C64 and we have no plans to make a mIRC version for these and other systems in the future. Sorry, there is tooo little time and toooo much to do... 2. Why Not try MUSIRC? Download it from http://www.geocities.com/musirc/ MUSIRC- is actually a hybrid version of mirc and has many built in and commands to the script to make your [IRC] experience a good one. The default network is irc.musirc.com SEARCHING-To search for files, press F3, then enter something to search for in the "Search field". Press Search once. DOWNLOADING-To Download a file from the results list, double click on the result. To open your download folder, press F2. PLAYING MP3S-To play mp3s, press F3, then go to the MP3 Player tab on the top part of your screen. You need to add your mp3 directories to the sharing section for songs to show up in the playlist. SHARING/FILE TRANSFER-To set your sharing and tranfer settings or to add mp3s to the playlist, go to the sharing tab after pressing F3. To send someone a file, type /send <nick> and the program will ask you what file to send. CHANGING YOUR NICKNAME-To change your display user name, press F5. JOINING OTHER CHANNELS-To join a different channel, press F6. MusIRC AOL INSTANT MESSENGER-If you have an AIM screename, you can sign onto the AIM server by pressing F12. CHATTING/CHATROOM-When connecting, you will automatically be connected to the main MusIRC Chatroom. Right click for chat options/ignore/buddy list options. You can also read ircintro.hlp in your main MusIRC folder for more assistance. While in the chatroom, you can private message people by double clicking on their nicks. You can send them notices by typing /notice nick <message>. Make sure you have the / in front. If you want to dcc chat them, type /chat nick and wait for them to acknowledge the chat request. All of these are 100% private. For public chat, just type the text in the main window that opens when you are connected. If you need more assistance, just ask inside the chatroom or send a message to the people with a @ next to their nick. These are the MusIRC operators. OTHER COMMANDS-For a list of commands and their function keys, press F4. There are also many features in the right click menus. SUPPORT/BUGS/SUGGESTIONS/RANTS/RAVES-Please send all comments, technical questions, bugs, whatever to xxjack12xx@doramail.com. Your emails will be read within 24 hours. NOTE-If you get a screen asking you to register, just close it. That is mirc asking you to register. If you want, you can register, if not, just close it. We do not charge anything whatsoever. contributions to this were found on http://www.coolscriptszone.com , http://www.mirc.com What are servers? Servers are the other end of the client/server system. Clients connect to servers which in turn hook them up to the whole IRC network. There are many servers on the two IRC networks (more on them later). It is best to connect to the server closest to you. But, if you are on an ISP or online service that is not local, connect to a server closest to where your services "main system" is closest to. Here a few to try irc.musirc.com (MUSIRC), irc.angeleyeznet.com (ANGELEYEZ), irc.atomicchat.net (AtomicChat), and irc.eskimo.com (Newnet). Part Two will give you a tour of each of these and their Peer to peer resources You can expect to find on each of them! ********************************************************************************Moving Around AND Getting The Most of [IRC]-Internet Relay Chatworks Part Two by Robb Russell. Try this first!! Do a search of many irc networks <http://irc.netsplit.de/networks/> and find your own, or try one of these networks now. Type in movies and see how many networks and channels offer movies or type one just released at the theater you want to see now. The search is on the bottom of the page. Then This Next!! Channels on networks have a # as part of their name. ex: #tms-chat Were getting into the fun stuff first I will show you a smaller network, MUSIRC. This was the beginning network TMS- TheMegaSource began on. Its best to visit with MUSIRC Client if tyou want to get MP3's from other members right away, but if that does not concern you just use MIRC. The network has a autojoin to its main channel and in main channel you find others to share files and search from each other. Often a game of trivia is found on the main too. Give it a try while you are there or find it always in #mensa. TMS has two channels #tms-chat which offers you a window to users outside of the MUSIRC Network and on as many as ten other networks. Great place to begin to learn that you don't need to be in one network come visit others on other networks from MUSIRC. #TMS-Movies- is the place for getting the latest movies or tv episodes. Someone will teach you how to share your own resources there too. Any movie, game, mp3's, software can be shared in the channel just use serving software like Excursion or Invision. Now Look at Atomic Chat! irc.atomicchat.com For starters #TMS-Chat and #TMS-Movies are there too! But there are channels Like #tvseries that carries many copies of tv episodes. #Darkwarez which offers a variety of movies, apps and games and porn. #Atomicchat- the main channel for chat on the network meet some of the regulars there. They are friendly. #MMM-Movies-like tms they offer the latest movies. Check em out! Star trek fans will find many channels interesting like #twiwia and #trekcentral and many more star trek and science fiction related channels. Many other channels and like nearly 600 users on line to communicate and share with online. ******************************************************************************** TMS News # VOL 1,ISSUE #5 October 13, 2002 We are No Longer The Movie Source - Now We Are Known As TMS-The Mega Source-tm Copyright © 2002 The Mega Source!.
